Exchange Impersonation is used in scenarios in which a single account needs to access many accounts. For Carbonite Safe Server Backup, Exchange Impersonation is used to access mailboxes for backup and restore. When setting up an Exchange Mailbox backup within the product, an administrator account must be provided by the user in order to access Exchange. The product will attempt to assign impersonation rights automatically to the chosen administrator user. If the product cannot automatically assign the impersonation rights, they must be added to the account manually with Powershell.

When configuring a Microsoft SQL Server backup set, the product relies on the SQL VSS Writer to generate the list of databases to be backed up. If the SQL VSS Writer is not available, the list of databases to back up does not appear and an 'Internal Error' is generated.

The product uses the Windows Volume Shadowcopy Service (VSS) to take snapshots of data for backup. Snapshots are used to take backups of data that is open, in-use, or locked by the system.
