Message: "Port 65000 is in use by another process"

Summary:

The Bare Metal Image backup process within Carbonite Safe Server Backup requires additional software to be installed. This additional software is installed automatically as part of creating a BMI backup set for the first time.

This software requires that internal port 65000 be open and available. If port 65000 is not open, the BMI backup or installation of BMI software will fail with the following error: “Port 65000 is in use by another process. This port is required to install or run Bare Metal Image backups. Please free this port and then try again.

Solution:

There is only one way to resolve this error: you must free up port 65000. There is no way to configure the BMI software to use another port.

Step 1: Determine what is using port 65000

  1. Open an elevated (Run as administrator) command prompt.
  2. Enter the command: netstat -ab > C:\netstat.txt.
    1. You may choose any path in place of C:\netstat.txt.
    2. It may take some time for the command to complete. There will be no progress bar in the command prompt.
  3. Once complete, open netstat.txt in Notepad.
  4. Search for port 65000.
    1. The port is listed in bold letters in this example. The process using the port is listed below the port number entry.
      1. TCP 0.0.0.0:65000 YOUR_HOSTNAME:0 LISTENING
        [Some_Program.exe]

The .exe process that follows the port entry in netstat.txt is the process that is using the port. In many cases, it will be obvious what program to which the process belongs, but this will not always be the case.

However, Carbonite Support cannot provide complete information on processes that do not belong to a Carbonite product. A list of Carbonite Safe Server Backup processes can be found here.

Step 2: Free port 65000

The most likely scenario is that the port will be in use by some program that is not a Carbonite product. Sometimes you can simply close the program using the port. Other times, you must change the port used by that program. Unfortunately, Carbonite cannot provide complete information on how to change ports used by programs that are not a part of Carbonite.

There is no way to configure the BMI software to use another port. Port 65000 must be free if you wish to use the Bare Metal Image backup type within Carbonite Safe Server Backup.
