FAQ: What is the amandabackup / CarboniteUser User? (CSSB 6.x)

Summary:

What is the amandabackup / CarboniteUser User?

This article applies to:

Carbonite Plans Products Platforms
Power and Ultimate (Not sure?) Carbonite Safe Server Backup (Not sure?) Windows

Solution:

Upon installation, Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB) creates a new local user named amandabackup / CarboniteUser. This local user is created as a Backup Operator and does not typically appear in the Windows logon screen. For fine-grained access control, CSSB uses amandabackup / CarboniteUser to perform all backup-related tasks. amandabackup / CarboniteUser is used for nearly every CSSB function, including:

  • Scheduling operations such as backup, upload, download, and restore.
  • Starting operations triggered manually.
  • Accessing encryption certificates.
  • Storing encryption passphrases.
  • Accessing mapped network drives.
    • You may specify a different user account for access to mapped drives and other network storage via the Verify access to network location option, within the Local Backup Location section of the backup set.
  • Running background services.

Windows Domains and amandabackup / CarboniteUser

If you intend to run CSSB in a domain environment, amandabackup / CarboniteUser must be created as a domain user. Please see How to Make amandabackup / CarboniteUser a Domain User.

If you plan to backup networked mapped drives in a Windows Domain environment, you must start the Carbonite Safe Server Backup Controller / Carbonite Server Backup Controller as the DOMAIN/amandabackup (or DOMAIN/CarboniteUser) user. Please see How to Use External or Mapped Network Drives with CSSB.
