How to Change the amandabackup / CarboniteUser User Password

  • This article is for Windows only

The amandabackup / CarboniteUser user password can be updated via the Update Carboniteuser Password option by navigating to Advanced; Update Carboniteuser Password within the Enhanced Interface. This command updates the password for the amandabackup / CarboniteUser user in CSSB's internal MySQL database and for CSSB's background services.

Due to security restrictions in certain Windows environments, domain group policies mandate that user account passwords change regularly. In fact, the default domain policy of a new Windows Active Directory forest has the Password Expiration policy set to 42 days.

In most Active Directory configurations, the Administrator will configure the Password Never Expire property for service-related user accounts, such as CSSB's amandabackup / CarboniteUser user.

It is recommended to enable the Password Never Expire property for the amandabackup / CarboniteUser user, unless your organization's security policy requires the password to be changed.

If the password policy demands that the amandabackup / CarboniteUser user password on the system must be changed, CSSB-related services that are started with amandabackup / CarboniteUser user will fail to start with Logon failure errors, and your backups will fail.

To update the amandabackup / CarboniteUser user password, please refer to the section below that best fits your configuration.

If the CSSB Machine is not Part of a Windows Domain

The CSSB Services run under amandabackup / CarboniteUser or localcomputer\amandabackup (localcomputer\CarboniteUser) credentials.

  1. The Administrator must change the amandabackup / CarboniteUser user password on the Windows system.
  2. Launch CSSB and run the Update Carboniteuser Password command. This will:
    1. Update the password in the internal CSSB MySQL database.
    2. Update for the background CSSB services
    3. Restart the background CSSB services

Note: If the local amandabackup / CarboniteUser account already exists and CSSB has been uninstalled as part of troubleshooting but you do not have the password, the password can be changed by running Command Prompt or Powershell as administrator and running the command net user carboniteuser password, substituting password with the desired new password and, as needed, carboniteuser with amandabackup.

If the CSSB Machine is Part of a Windows Domain

The CSSB Services run under domain\amandabackup (or domain\CarboniteUser) credentials.

  1. The Administrator must change the amandabackup / CarboniteUser user password in Windows Active Directory.
  2. Launch CSSB and run the Update Carboniteuser Password command. This will:
    1. Update the password in the internal CSSB MySQL database.
    2. Update for the background CSSB services
    3. Restart the background CSSB services
  3. If there are other machines on the domain that run CSSB, repeat step 2 for all of them. Failure to update the password within CSSB will result in Logon Failed errors.

Note: If the local amandabackup / CarboniteUser account already exists and CSSB has been uninstalled as part of troubleshooting but you do not have the password, the password can be changed via Active Directory Users and Computers on the domain controller.
