How to Back Up Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) Databases

  • This article is for Windows only

Summary:

Windows Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) is a standards-based service that allows the secure sharing of identity information between trusted business partners (known as a federation) across an extranet. This information is stored in one or more databases.

In CSSB, the ADFS databases will appear as standard Microsoft SQL databases when the Microsoft SQL Server backup type is chosen.

However, the ADFS databases are not standard MSSQL databases; special circumstances apply.

Solution:

The sections below are collapsed. Please click the section title to open / close a particular section.

For Windows 2012 and 2012 R2

The ADFS databases are backed up and restored as a part of Windows System State. If one does not exist, create a Windows System State backup set.

Remove the ADFS databases from any Microsoft SQL Server backup set.

For Windows 2008 and 2008 R2

The ADFS databases are backed up and restored as Microsoft SQL Server databases, but only in CSSB 4.12 or higher.

Backup and restore of ADFS databases is not supported in CSSB 4.11 or lower. Backups will fail for any Microsoft SQL Server backup set that includes an ADFS databases. Please de-select the ADFS databases in any Microsoft SQL Server backup set.

For Windows 2003 and 2003 R2

Backup and restore of ADFS databases is not supported in Windows 2003 and 2003 R2. Microsoft SQL Server backups will fail if ADFS instances are selected. Please de-select the ADFS databases in any Microsoft SQL Server backup set.
