Known Issue: Internal Error Appears When Configuring a Microsoft SQL Server Backup Set

Summary:

When configuring a Microsoft SQL Server backup set, CSSB relies on the SQL VSS Writer to generate the list of databases to be backed up. If the SQL VSS Writer is not available, this list of databases will not appear and an "Internal Error" will be generated.

This article applies to:

Carbonite Plans Products Platforms
Power and Ultimate (Not sure?) Carbonite Safe Server Backup (Not sure?) Windows

Solution

Run Command Prompt as an administrator and enter the following command:

vssadmin list writers

A list of VSS Writers will appear. Verify that a writer named SQLServerWriter is included in this list. If SQLServerWriter is not listed, action must be taken before it will be possible to configure the Microsoft SQL Server backup set.

Begin by ensuring that all requirements for Microsoft SQL Server backups are met. Requirements are outlined in the Carbonite Safe Server Backup User Guide.

Once all requirements are met, re-run the vssadmin list writers command in another Command Prompt (as administrator). If the SQL VSS Writer is still not listed, please refer to Troubleshooting SQL VSS Writer issues for further troubleshooting information.
