Hyper-V Incremental Backups on Windows Server 2008 R2 Fail

  • This article is for Windows only

Summary:

Backing up a Hyper-V virtual machine involves many steps. During this process, Volume Shadowcopy Services will automatically mount the snapshotted Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) files in order to revert them back to their original state.

If automount is disabled in Windows, VSS cannot mount the snapshotted VHD files and Incremental backups will fail.

Solution:

To resolve this issue, please enable automount as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753703(v=ws.11).aspx.
