Optimizing Carbonite's Internal Database

Summary:

Carbonite Safe Server Backup utilizes an internal database to store information about the backups. This database will grow in size as time passes and more backups are performed and deleted. Every CSSB installation includes a script that will optimize database performance and space usage on a disk. If the performance of backups degrades or if the database grows excessively large, it may be necessary to optimize the database.

Solution:

To manually optimize the database, follow the steps below:

  1. Update to version 6.6 before running this batch script.
  2. Download OptimizeDatabaseTables.bat (right-click the link>Save link as...).
  3. Run OptimizeDatabaseTables.bat using the Run as Administrator option.
    1. To run the file directly, right-click the file and choose Run as Administrator.
    2. The script can also be run from the command prompt. The command prompt must be launched using the Run as Administrator option.
  4. The operation is logged in the OptimizeTableLog.txt file, located in the Debug folder of your CSSB installation directory. This file can be used for troubleshooting if necessary.
  5. Please be patient and do not interrupt the process. The operation may take a long time - especially for large databases.

You can create a scheduled task in the Windows Task Scheduler to run the optimization script. Ensure that you do not run the optimization script at the same time as any other CSSB operations, such as backup, upload, download, or restore. If optimization is run at the same time as any other operation, failures may occur.
