Message: "Failed to discover Exchange mailboxes. Please give "Discovery management" permission to the Exchange login user"

Summary:

Exchange mailboxes, for both local and online Exchange servers, are accessed for backup via an administrator account specified by the user.

This administrator account must have the "Discovery Management" right. CSSB will attempt to add the Discovery Management rights to the user automatically.

The error Failed to discover Exchange mailboxes. Please give "Discovery management" permission to the Exchange login user is shown when CSSB cannot add these rights automatically.

This error can only appear for the following backup types:

  • Exchange Local Mailboxes (Exchange 2013 only)
  • Exchange Online hosted for Office 365

Solution:

To resolve this error, manually add the Discovery Management permission to the administrator account as shown in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd298059%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx.
