Microsoft Database Applications and Multiple Backup Sources

Microsoft produces three database applications: SQL Server, Exchange, and SharePoint. Any given database within any of these database applications should only be backed up by one backup source. It is not recommended to back up the same database with multiple backup sources, unless all of the backup sources use full backups only. There is a great risk of backup failure and/or data loss if a database is backed up by multiple backup sources and incremental/differential backups are involved.

Hyper-V Backup For CSSB 6.x Enhanced

Hyper-V is Microsoft's virtualization host. It allows users to create, run, and manage virtual machines. Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB) supports backup and restore of virtual machines hosted by Hyper-V server installations on Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2016. Hyper-V backups support full backups on Windows Server 2008 and higher. Incremental backups are supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 and higher. Differential backups are not supported on any platform. CSSB is able to take snapshots of files located on network shares configured with the SMB3 protocol.

Hyper-V Incremental Backups on Windows Server 2008 R2 Fail

If you are running Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V Incremental backups mail fail with the following error message: A vss snapshot could not be created. Please review backuperrors.txt found at < file path >. Within the backuperrors.txt file, you will see a message similar to the following: FailureMsg="No snapshots to revert were found for virtual machine".

Message: "Unable to Create a Snapshot of <Name of Virtual Machine>"

During a Hyper-V backup, you may encounter an error if the Volume Shadowcopy Services are unable to create a snapshot of a virtual machine.

Message: "Carbonite Safe Server Backup Controller and/or Carbonite Safe Server Cloud Controller Could not be Started due to Log on Failure"

When the product attempts to perform some action, such as saving a backup set, starting a backup, or changing log level, you might receive an error message. However, the error can appear at any time. One of the errors could be as follows: Carbonite Safe Server Backup Controller could not be started due to a log on failure, Carbonite Safe Server Cloud Controller could not be started due to a log on failure, Carbonite Safe Server Backup Controller and Carbonite Safe Server Cloud Controller could not be started due to a log on failure.

When Carbonite Safe Server Backup attempts to perform some action, such as saving a backup set, starting a backup, or changing log level, you might receive an error message stating that one of CSSB's services could not be started. However, the error can appear at any time.
