Functionality

  • CSSB 6.6 only supports 64-bit operating systems. Any non-legacy operating systems that are running 32-bit OS will only be able to update to 6.5.1 going forward.

Carbonite Safe Server Backup 6.5.1 Build 9390 Release Notes

Carbonite Safe Server Backup version 6.5.1 was released on December 8, 2020. The client will show 6.5 9390

Issues Addressed

  • Resolved an issue where the UI would not open after upgrading to CSSB 6.5 from 6.4 (or lower) when Private Key Encryption was enabled for any backup set.
  • Resolved an issue where the UI would not open due to unexpected values in config files.
  • Resolved an issue where “Please retry the version update” could appear within the CSSB UI even if the customer was on the latest version.
  • Resolved an issue where extra “\” characters were added into paths when network locations were used for backup storage. This previously would cause backup sets to fail validation and could prevent backup sets from saving properly.
  • Resolved an issue where some registry keys were not properly restored during a System State restore.
  • Resolved an issue where a domain trust could be broken after a System State restore.
  • Resolved a File System restore issue related to backup cycles that included Full, Differential, and Incremental backups and whose backups were taken in a combination of 6.5 and pre-6.5.
  • Resolved issues relating to restoring from backup cycles that use Private Key Encryption where some of the backup runs were taken in a combination of 6.5 and pre-6.5.
  • Resolved an issue where deleting from cloud only or local only could make the other disappear from the UI (but the backup itself was still safe wherever it was stored). This previously would have impacted retention as CSSB only enforces retention on backup runs it can see.
  • Resolved issues relating to discovery and backup of MySQL databases.
  • Resolved an issue where the database could become corrupted during the upgrade process.

Carbonite Safe Server Backup 6.5 Build 9293 Release Notes

Carbonite Safe Server Backup version 6.5 Build 9293 was released on July 7th, 2020.

Functionality

Server 2019 and the 2019 versions of Hyper-V, Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, and SharePoint are now fully supported.

Introduced a new feature that detects a mis-matched file system backup set and then fixes it without user intervention.

Carbonite Safe Server Backup 6.4 Release Notes

Carbonite Safe Server Backup version 6.4 was released on November 4th, 2019 and contains the following changes:

Functionality

  • Replaces requirement for Java 8 or higher with Amazon Corretto 8.
    • Carbonite Safe Server Backup 5.x for legacy operating systems still requires Java 7.
  • CSSB will search for updates more often without user action and this functionality is retroactive for CSSB versions 6.2 and 6.1.
    • If an update is found, the user will receive an alert to update. CSSB will pause in progress uploads or downloads, close the interface, perform the update, then resume the operation.
    • If other operations are in progress, such as a backup or restore, CSSB will not update and will try again at the next checkpoint.

Issues Addressed

  • Fixed an issue which prevented the log collection tool from successfully uploading logs.

Carbonite Safe Server Backup 6.3 Release Notes

Carbonite Safe Server Backup version 6.3 contains the following changes:

Functionality

There are no new features.

Usability

Server 2008 and Windows Vista are now considered legacy operating systems by Carbonite Safe Server Backup.

  • Customers that are on a legacy operating system and are using CSSB 6.x will receive CSSB 6.3 when they upgrade.
  • Customers that are on a legacy operating system and are using CSSB 5.x will receive CSSB 5.6 when they upgrade.

Please note that the Smart Installer will no longer work on legacy operating systems, which includes Windows XP, Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Server 2008. However, the standard installer will be available through the Carbonite Safe Pro account dashboard.

Issues Addressed

This release is a maintenance release that addresses several known issues in the existing product. In addition, this release contains changes to how Carbonite authenticates with Amazon storage.

Carbonite Safe Server Backup 6.2 Release Notes

Carbonite Safe Server Backup version 6.2 contains the following changes:

Functionality

  • All backup types are now supported by the Enhanced UI.
  • Added support for Microsoft SQL Server 2017.
  • The Classic UI has been removed. The Enhanced UI is now the only UI in CSSB 6.2 and higher.
    • There are numerous changes related to this. Any workflow that once referred to the Classic UI no longer does so.
  • Removed support for Oracle backups.

Usability

  • Users can now import their cloud certificate even if they are over quota. A warning will still appear, but it will not stop the import of the certificate.
  • A proper error is now thrown during BMI backups when the sum size of all partitions on a disk is larger than the disk itself.
    • "The total size of all partitions on <disks> is larger than the size of the disk itself. Please resize your partitions to be equal to or smaller than your disk."

Issues Addressed

  • Fixed issue that prevented users from creating Recovery Media for BMI backups more than once when using the USB Drive option.
  • Fixed issue where the Carbonite Hyper-V Service could not start on Windows Server 2012 systems (did not affect Windows Server 2012 R2). Attempts to start the service would indicate it could not verify the digital signature.
  • Fixed issue where, occasionally, the checkmark in the "Backup to Cloud" box (seen when editing a backup set, just above the schedules box) would disappear even if the backup set was configured to back up to cloud and schedules indicated backups to cloud would occur. Backups to cloud would in fact still occur, but this caused much confusion.
  • Fixed rare issue in Hyper-V backups that could cause backup of some VMs when the VSS Hyper-V Writer tries to use the short form of a path rather than the long form.
  • Fixed rare issue in file system backups involving network mounted drives. In some cases, the checkmarks indicating files/folders were selected, but the checkmarks could disappear after saving/refreshing/reopening the UI. The files/folders were not actually de-selected (and thus would continue to be backed up), but this caused confusion.
  • Fixed issue where the Discovery process would fail during creation/setup of Exchange Online Mailbox backups sets if one or more mailboxes have empty SMTP address values.
  • Fixed issue where, occasionally, a blank pop-up window would appear when CSSB was verifying subscription information. The most common times this appeared were while importing cloud certificate or creating a new backup set. Typically the blank window would appear once, never to be seen again The window should have shown an error about verifying subscription information. Now it only appears if it truly fails to verify, and it displays the correct error.

Carbonite Safe Server Backup 6.1 Release Notes

Carbonite Safe Server Backup 6.1 was released on November 9, 2017.

CSSB 6.1 is not available to customers running Windows XP or Server 2003.

Carbonite Safe Server Backup version 6.1 contains the following changes:

Functionality

  • Added support for Java 9.
    • The Smart Installer still installs Java 8, but will not do so if either Java 8 or Java 9 are detected on the system.
  • Log files in \Debug\ are now preserved during standard upgrades using the Smart Installer.
  • Removed "Warning" status for System State backups. Every file is necessary for restore. Backups will fail if any file fails to backup.
  • Added manual options to "Import Backup Set" functions. This allows power users to manually enter server and backup set names without waiting on the automated scans to complete.

Usability

  • Branding update: Carbonite Server Backup (CSB) is now Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB). Text and logos have been updated throughout the user interface and in most error messages.
  • The Enhanced Interface is now available for these additional backup types:
    • Microsoft Exchange Database
    • Microsoft SQL Server
    • Hyper-V
    • Mailstore
  • The "Advanced" menu in the Enhanced Interface is now visible from all pages, such as the Import Cloud Certificate page.
  • Added horizontal scrollbar to Enhanced UI for easier use on low-resolution displays.

Issues Addressed

  • Fixed issue where the Cloud Certificate could not be imported if C:\\Downloads\ did not exist.
  • CSSB now returns the correct error when one or more VSS Writers required for System State backups do not return proper metadata.
  • CSSB now returns an error if a restore completes without any other error, but no data is actually restored.
  • Fixed issue in which the UI could fail to open with an error "another user is already running this application" even if no other user was running the application.
  • Fixed issue where Impersonation would fail for Exchange 2016 Mailbox backups.
  • Fixed excessive resource consumption when email server information was improperly configured.
  • Updated error related to use of BMI backups on LVM/LDM disks.
    • The proper error is now returned if an LVM/LDM disk is in use.
    • The error text now refers to "Dynamic" disks instead of LVM/LDM to reduce confusion.
  • Fixed issue where System State backup could complete, but with no data in the backup, if Windows Management Infrastructure components are disabled or broken on the system.
    • The backup now fails with appropriate WMI-related error.
  • Fixed crash scenario during Microsoft SQL Server backups when VSS returned the database name in multiple different functions, but the name returned did not always have the same capitalization.
  • Fixed issue where the next incremental backup would include unmodified files, causing it to be approximately as large as a full backup, under the following workflow:
    • Take full backup > Take any number of incremental backups > Uninstall, using the "do not preserve configuration" option > Install > Import backup set > Take new incremental backup. The new incremental would have included unmodified files in CSB 6.0.1 or lower.
  • Fixed issue where Hyper-V backups could fail with "one or more Virtual machines selected for backup no longer exists" if a VM was selected for backup, but had no VHD/VHDX files associated with it.
  • Updated log collection script to use a temp folder under \ProgramData\ to avoid potential issues on Windows Server 2016 where security features may restrict writes to \Program Files\
  • CPU usage no longer stays high after changing log level.
  • Fixed rare issue in which uploads of BMI backups could silently crash due to a race condition.
  • Fixed issue that could result in backups that could not be deleted under the following workflow:
    • Upload of data begins > Upload is paused or stopped > Partial upload is deleted via the SMB Dashboard > Upload is resumed. The resumed partial upload could not be deleted in 6.0.1 or lower.
  • Fixed extremely long load times during Add New Backup Set operations when there are multiple Microsoft SQL Server Instances and the carboniteuser account cannot access them. (Approximately 1-2 minutes per instance that cannot be accessed)
  • Added the /norestart flag to installation of the Microsoft VC++ Redistributables during CSSB upgrades and installations, to help prevent unplanned reboots.
  • Fixed restore scenario where the restore completed "successfully" without restoring any data caused by single quote characters in backup set names.

Carbonite Server Backup 6.0.1 Release Notes

CSB 6.0.1 addresses numerous fixes from the 6.0 version. There are no new features.

Issues Addressed

  • Resolved issue where a customer who had a trial, then purchased Office Power, would receive false “your server only supports the use of one server” errors.
  • Resolved issue where the Carbonite Remote Management service would create hundreds or thousands of loopback requests, consuming far too many TCP ports.
  • Resolved multiple false-positive restore issues in which a restore could complete “successfully” but not actually write any data to disk.
  • Resolved a File System restore issue in which a selective restore of some files would restore all data instead.
  • Resolved an issue in which incremental or differential backups to disk and cloud would fail with “Index Creation Failed” if they ran while the previous backup was still uploading.
  • Resolved an issue where files whose paths are greater than 256 characters would be backed up in incremental backups even if they had not changed.
