Restoring Individual Files or Folders

You can restore a few files or folders through the Carbonite software. If you have replaced your computer and are looking to restore all your backed up files, please refer to the article for restoring all of your files (for Carbonite Safe or for Carbonite Safe Pro).

There are multiple ways to restore a couple of files or folders to a computer. All options will let you get a single file or group of files back onto your computer in the easiest way possible. Please choose the restore option that best suits your needs below:

  • Using the Carbonite Software - This option guides you through using the Carbonite software to restore file(s) or folder(s) onto your computer. This option is best for those who can easily navigate around a folder structure on their computer in order to locate what they want to restore.   • Using Anytime Anywhere Access - This option will guide you through signing into your Carbonite account and remotely accessing your backed up files so that you can restore them to your computer. This option is useful for those who are either not on the computer where Carbonite is installed and still need to remotely access their backup or for those who are more comfortable with a web interface. Click the appropriate link below for a detailed walkthrough on remotely restoring your files.

Select your version of Carbonite for Mac (you can use these instructions to determine which version you have).

I am running Carbonite Version 1.x

How to Restore Individual Files and Folders in Version 1.x

If Carbonite isn't installed, install it now by signing into your account at, clicking Reinstall Carbonite, and following the prompts. If Carbonite is already installed, proceed to the next step.

Once installed, open your System Preferences from the Apple icon in your menu bar, then select Carbonite.

In the drop-down list for the Backup Is: field, select in Recover mode.

Click Proceed.

Click the Restore tab.

  • If your Carbonite Preference pane appears blank after you click the Restore tab, follow these instructions.

Browse to the file you wish to restoreTo download files from Carbonite’s servers to your computer.. Once located, click the file to select it.

  • Grayed out files that appear here are not backed up.

Choosing a Restore Location

Restore files to: - Allows you to choose the location to which your data will be restored:

  • Original Location on Disk - Restores to original location.
  • Desktop Folder - Creates a desktop folder called Carbonite Restored Files and restores to it.
  • Other Location... - Manually select a custom restore location.

Make your selection and click Restore Selected Item(s).

Click the button on the right to restore the file to the specified location. If a file with the same name already exists at that location, it will be overwritten.

If you wish to choose a different restore location, click one of the other buttons.

Now just sit back and relax while your files are restored to your computer.

I am running Carbonite Version 2.x

How to Restore Individual Files and Folders in Version 2.x

Click the Carbonite icon in the menu bar and select Open Carbonite.

Navigate to the file or folder you wish to restore from the MY FILES or DRIVES sections on the left.

To restore the file to its original location, click the Get this back / Download button. To select a custom restore location, click the down arrow and select Choose location.

Now just sit back and relax while your files are restored to your computer.
