FAQ: What Does Carbonite Do When an Internet Connection is Not Present?

Summary:

What does Carbonite do when an internet connection is not present?

This article applies to:

Carbonite Plans Products Platforms
Basic, Plus, Prime, Core, Power, and Ultimate (Not sure?) Safe and Safe Pro (Not sure?) Windows and Mac

Solution:

When Carbonite can't detect an internet connection, it will continue scanning your computer for new and modified files until a connection is reestablished. Likewise, files can not be restored without an internet connection. If your connection is interrupted during a restore, the restore will pick up from where it left off when the connection is reestablished.

If your Windows computer is disconnected from the internet for too long, the Carbonite icon will turn red to indicate that it can't connect to our servers; If your Mac computer is disconnected from the internet for too long, the Backup Status will indicate that Carbonite is waiting for an Internet Connection. If you don't connect to our servers for an extended period of time (e.g. 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 1 month, etc.), you will receive email notices that your computer needs to reconnect to our servers.

If your computer is off or you are on vacation, Carbonite will begin to send your new and changed files to our servers as soon as it detects that your Internet connection has been re-established.

If you receive notifications even though you haven't experienced an internet outage, rebooting your computer may resolve the issue. If it doesn't, please reinstall Carbonite for Windows or reinstall Carbonite for Mac.
