Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB) utilizes a set of built-in Windows functions known as Volume Shadowcopy Services, or VSS. VSS allows backups of in-use, locked, or open files without interrupting whatever process or user is currently accessing those files. Most backup types in CSSB will rely upon one or more VSS Writers.

When configuring a Microsoft SQL Server backup set, the product relies on the SQL VSS Writer to generate the list of databases to be backed up. If the SQL VSS Writer is not available, the list of databases to back up does not appear and an 'Internal Error' is generated.

Message: "The VSS Snapshot was deleted by the system"

The product uses the Windows Volume Shadowcopy Service (VSS) to take snapshots of data for backup. Snapshots are used to take backups of data that is open, in-use, or locked by the system. Windows may delete a snapshot mid-backup for many reasons. If the snapshot is deleted, the message 'The VSS Snapshot was deleted by the system.' will be displayed.

Message: "One or more of the VSS Writers required for backup type are missing"

If one or more VSS Writers is unavailable while attempting to perform a backup, you will receive an error message stating that the Application writer's data is not available. Please check the application writer status.

Known Issue: Validation of Backup Set Fails for SharePoint Backup

If you receive an error message stating validation of backup failed, while attempting to perform SharePoint backups, it indicates the VSS writer for SharePoint or SQL server is not available.

Troubleshooting SQL VSS Writer Issues

The most important command when diagnosing any VSS issue is vssadmin list writers. This command will display all of the writers active on your system and the status of each.

Known Issue: System State Backup Fails and the System Writer is Missing

The product uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to perform backups of your Windows-based machine. VSS has several writers that are used for this purpose. You can return a list of VSS writers by opening a command prompt and entering the command vssadmin list writers. The names of these writers are mostly self-explanatory. The SQL Writer is for backups of SQL. The System Writer is for backups of System State, and so on.
