Message: "The backup set failed validation because it contains one or more junction point directories."

Summary:

You may encounter an error that states The backup set failed validation because it contains one or more junction point directories. Please exclude the following directories from your backup set when one or more of the following actions is performed:

  • A backup set is saved
  • A backup set is validated
  • A backup is triggered manually or via schedule

Note: A list of directories will be displayed as part of the error message.

Cause:

This error occurs when a junction point directory has been explicitly selected for backup. A junction point directory is a directory that points to another directory. Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB) ignores junction points to prevent the same data from being backed up twice.

For example, \Documents and Settings\[user]\My Documents\, which was used in Windows XP, has become \Users\[user]\Documents\ in Windows Vista or later. Junction points were created to link one to the other, to make the change easier on developers and users. In this specific example, \My Documents\ is the junction point that links to \Documents\.

Carbonite Plans Products Platforms
Power and Ultimate (Not sure?) Carbonite Safe Server Backup (Not sure?) Windows

Solution:

To resolve this error message, remove all of the indicated Junction Point directories from the backup set. After you do so, select the real directories for backup.
