Relocating the misc Folder

Summary:

Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB) uses the misc folder as temporary space during some backup operations. However, you may need to move this folder due to disk space limitations to make backup runs possible. In these instances, the misc folder within CSSB needs to be relocated to a drive with more space.

Solution:

To move the misc folder to a new location, you must edit the Windows Registry and move some existing files. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Registry Editor.
  2. Create a new folder named misc in the location of your choice.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Zmanda\ZWC\1.0\Engine.
  4. Double-click the TempDir and TemplateLocation variables and note the folder(s) specified. By default, these folders are:

    For new users
    • For 32-bit operating systems: C:\ProgramData\Carbonite\Carbonite Safe Server Backup\misc\ or C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Safe Server Backup\misc\ or both, depending on your version of Windows.
    • For 64-bit operating systems: C:\ProgramData\Carbonite\Carbonite Safe Server Backup(x64)\misc\ or C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Safe Server Backup(x64)\misc\ or both, depending on your version of Windows.

    For existing users
    • For 32-bit operating systems: C:\ProgramData\Carbonite\Carbonite Server Backup\misc\ or C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Server Backup\misc\ or both, depending on your version of Windows.
    • For 64-bit operating systems: C:\ProgramData\Carbonite\Carbonite Server Backup(x64)\misc\ or C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Server Backup(x64)\misc\ or both, depending on your version of Windows.

Note: Make sure that the local amandabackup / CarboniteUser user has administrator privileges to the folder created in step 2.

If you are running Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) under a user account other than administrator, then that user account should also be given administrator privileges to the folder in step 2 as well.

  1. Open the folder(s) in a separate explorer window.
  2. Copy all files from the the folder(s) in step 4 to the new folder created in step 2.
    • For Windows Vista and above, you must copy the files from C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Server Backup\misc\, and C:\ProgramData\Carbonite\Carbonite Server Backup\misc\.
    • For earlier versions of Windows, you must only copy the files from the \Program Files\ directory.
  3. In the Registry Editor, double click the TempDir and TemplateLocation variables and include the full path to the new directory from step 2.
Note: Make sure that the path used is as follows: D:\misc\. D:\misc is incorrect.
  4. Navigate to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
  5. Restart the Carbonite Safe Server Backup Controller / Carbonite Server Backup Controller to apply the changes.
