Message: "Volume X Must Be Backed Up To Boot The System After a Bare Metal Restore"
Summary:
The following error may occur during backups of any Bare Metal Image backup set in CSSB 6.0 or higher.
Volume x: must be backed up to boot the system after a bare metal restore. Backups will continue to fail until this volume is selected for backup.
The x: is a placeholder. It may be any drive letter that exists on the system.
This article applies to:
| Carbonite Plans | Products | Platforms |
| Power and Ultimate (Not sure?) | Carbonite Safe Server Backup (Not sure?) | Windows |
Cause:
On some systems, backup of the Windows System drive, usually the C:\ drive, is not sufficient for bare metal recovery.
This is generally caused when a Windows Service exists on a drive that is not selected for backup. In this situation, the VSS System Writer reacts to that scenario by excluding system files from backup on all drives, even on drives selected for backup.
When it comes time to perform recovery, the system cannot boot because the system files were not included in the backup.
CSSB 6.0 (or higher) is able to detect this situation, and it throws the error seen in this article.
Solution:
You must select the volume or volumes indicated in the error for backup. CSSB 6.0 (or higher) will not allow you to take Bare Metal Image backups until all volumes necessary for boot after Bare Metal Recovery are included in the backup.
