Message: "Failed to Create Snapshot for One or More Volumes"
Summary:
A Bare Metal Image backup fails with the following error:
Failed to create snapshot for one or more volumes. Please see this knowledgebase article for more information.
This article applies to:
| Carbonite Plans | Products | Platforms |
| Power and Ultimate (Not sure?) | Carbonite Safe Server Backup (Not Sure?) | Windows |
Cause:
The error in this article indicates that Carbonite Safe Server Backup is unable to take a VSS (Volume Shadowcopy Services) snapshot of one or more volumes included in the backup.
Carbonite Safe Server Backup, like nearly all Windows backups, has several requirements related to VSS. This includes Bare Metal Image backups.
This error usually occurs when one or more of the following is true:
- VSS is disabled.
- There is no VSS shadowstorage configured for one or more drives included in the backup.
- One or more drives dedicated to VSS shadowstorage is critically low on space, preventing snapshot creation.
Windows System Event logs are frequently helpful in diagnosing exactly why a snapshot cannot be taken.
Please refer to this Microsoft article for more information on general VSS event IDs.
Solution:
If you encounter the above error, please ensure that all CSSB system requirements are met, especially those related to VSS (Volume Shadowcopy Services). VSS requirements are outlined in the System Requirements section of the User Guide.
In particular, ensure that:
More information on how to manage Shadowstorage can be found in this article.
- VSS is enabled.
- There is VSS shadowstorage configured for all drives selected for backup, with at least 10% space allocated to each.
- Any drive that contains VSS shadowstorage has sufficient space necessary to store snapshots. Free space should be equal to or higher than the amount allocated for shadowstorage.
