Adjusting the Maximum Number of Incremental Backups (CSSB 6.x)

Summary:

By default, Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB) only allows the user to run 300 Incremental backups. However, users can adjust the Windows Registry to allow up to 500 Incremental backups.

The resources consumed by CSSB during a backup increase for each Incremental backup in the backup chain. The more Incremental backups there are, the more memory CSSB requires and the longer it takes for each backup. To keep time and memory usage at reasonable levels, a periodic Full backup is required.

Starting with CSSB version 6.8, File System backup sets no longer have a limit on the number of incremental backups allowed. Incremental backups in this state are also close to two times as efficient as on previous CSSB versions. For more information review FAQ: Forever Incrementals - Introduction and Best Practices.

Solution:

To edit the Windows Registry to allow more incremental backups, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch the Registry editor by typing regedit in the Run or Search fields of the Start menu.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Zmanda\ZWC\1.0\Engine\.
  3. Look for the key MaxBackupLevel.
    1. If MaxBackupLevel is not present, create it. It is a REG_DWORD key.
  4. Set the Value to the number of incremental backups you wish to allow.
    1. This is a Decimal value, and not Hexadecimal (The maximum number is 500).
  5. Restart all Carbonite Safe Server Backup services. This can be done via the Windows Services panel or by navigating to the Advanced page and clicking Restarting your Background Service (under the Help section) within the CSSB Enhanced Interface.
