Locating the Carbonite Icon

The Carbonite icon is located in the Windows notification area. It can be used to open the Carbonite InfoCenter / application, pause Carbonite for up to 24 hours, and enter Recover Mode for safekeeping.

Note: If you do not see the icon, click the show hidden icons button ( < ) next to your Windows notification area to view hidden icons. In Windows 7, click the Show hidden icons button ( ^ ) next to your Windows notification area, to see the Carbonite icon. If you are running Windows 8 and are not viewing the desktop, please press the Windows Key + D on your keyboard to view the desktop.

If you hover your mouse over the Carbonite icon, you will see a small status message describing what Carbonite is currently doing. Some of the status messages are:

  • Backup in progress... - Carbonite is backing up your files or the changes to those files.
  • Backup is pending - Carbonite has compiled a list of new or changed files to upload; backup will begin shortly.
  • Backup is starting... - The back up session has started, and Carbonite is attempting to make contact with your storage server.
  • Searching for files to back up - Carbonite is scanning your computer for new/updated files and compiling a list of items to upload at the next backup session.
  • Your computer is not backing up new files to the cloud while you are restoring - Your backupA set of copies of your files on our servers. is frozen / paused for safekeeping should you need to restoreTo download files from Carbonite's servers to your computer. files.

The Carbonite icon will have a slightly different appearance based on Carbonite's current activity. The basic colors are:

  • Plain Carbonite icon - Carbonite is operating normally. It may currently be backing up files, or scanning your computer for new/changed files.
  • Carbonite icon with ellipsis (...) - Carbonite backup is pending. Backup operations can be started manually now, but intervention is not required. Backup will automatically start at the next backup session.
  • Carbonite icon with two grey bars - Carbonite has been paused. Backup and restore operations are not currently operating. Carbonite will automatically return to normal activity after the selected pause duration expires.
  • Carbonite icon with downward-pointing grey arrow - Carbonite is currently in Recover Mode. Backup operations have ceased, and no changes will occur to your backed up files. This setting is used to pause the backup while recovering your files to a new machine.
  • Carbonite icon with red x - Carbonite has been disabled. Backup and restore operations are not currently operating, and will not automatically restart. This requires your intervention.

You can double-click on the Carbonite icon to open the Carbonite InfoCenter / application, or right-click the icon to quickly access some frequently used options.
