Locating Your Files After a Restore (Mac 2x)

Summary:

Files and folders are usually restored to the same locations from which they were originally backed up, or to new locations that you choose. This allows you to retrieve data quickly and continue with your work. You can use your computer's search feature, Spotlight, to locate any restored files.

Solution:

If you restored to a new computer using the Restore Assistant, you were asked to match user accounts and choose where to restore your files. For example, if your username was "Bob" on your old computer, and your username is "Bobby" on your new computer, you were given the option in the Restore Assistant to direct the files under "Bob" to restore to "Bobby." When your restore completes, your backed up data will appear on the new computer under "Bobby."

If you chose to restore all files to their original locations and the username from the previous computer does not exist on the new computer, Carbonite created the user folder and restored your files to that location. If you're having trouble finding the files, you can browse your computer's similar locations, such as Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.

If you still can't locate files and folders on your computer after a restore, you can use Spotlight to find them. To use Spotlight, click the Magnifying Glass in the Menu bar at the top of the screen, then type the name of the file or folder you're looking for. Search results will populate as you type. Selecting a folder will open it in Finder; selecting a file will open that file in the appropriate program on your computer (if installed).
