Schedules Could not be Added or Modified

  • This article is for Windows only

Summary:

The following error appears when trying to add a backup schedule or save a backup set: Schedules could not be added or modified.

This error occurs when CSSB is unable to save changes to one or more backup schedules within a backup set. There are three primary causes:

  • Backup schedules cannot be modified if someone clicks No on the Windows User Access Control (UAC) prompts that appear when CSSB is launched or schedules are modified.
  • This error can occur if CSSB is trying to use a temporary storage directory that is unreachable.
  • However, the most common cause is one or more problems with the Windows Task Scheduler. CSSB relies on the Task Scheduler for all schedule-related functions.

Solution:

To resolve this issue, verify all of the following.

The sections below are collapsed. Please click the section title to open / close a particular section.

Windows User Access Control (UAC)

Schedules cannot be modified if someone clicks No to the Windows User Access Control (UAC) prompts that appear when launching CSSB or modifying schedules.

Close and then re-open CSSB if you clicked No to a UAC prompt. Say Yes to the UAC prompts.

Temporary Directory

CSSB writes a temporary file to its Temporary Folder when adding, saving, or modifying backup schedules. This temporary folder must be accessible by CSSB.

The Temporary Directory setting is defined in the Preferences; Advanced menu. Verify that the Temporary Directory setting in CSSB meets the following criteria:

  • It is on a disk that is connected to the system.
  • It is a folder that actually exists.
  • It is not located on a network share.
  • The folder is not read-only.

For example, if the Temporary Directory is G:\Carbonite Safe Server Backup\temp\, make sure that the folder actually exists. Double check for typos and misspellings. Also, if the G:\ drive is an external disk, verify that the drive is connected to the system and still has the same drive letter.

If you change the Temporary Directory setting, you must restart the CSSB background services before the change will take effect. Click Tools; Restart background services.

Windows Task Scheduler

Windows Task Scheduler is called Scheduled Tasks in some versions of Windows. These are the same thing for the purposes of this article.

Scheduled backups in Carbonite Safe Server Backup rely upon the Windows Task Scheduler. Each backup schedule is created as a task within the Task Scheduler. CSSB must be able to create, modify, and save changes to tasks, but it cannot do so if the Windows Task Scheduler is broken.

Begin by attempting to create a basic task directly in the Windows Task Scheduler.

  1. Open the Windows Task Scheduler.
  2. Attempt to create a new basic task.
    1. This task can be anything, such as opening notepad.exe.
  3. Set the task to start in the very near future.
  4. Save the task.
  5. Verify if the task is able to launch on time.

If this process fails at any point, attempts by CSSB to manage backup schedules will fail in the same manner. CSSB will not be able to create, modify, or save backup schedules until the system administrator fixes the Windows Task Scheduler.
