How to Install the Java Runtime Environment for CSSB 6.0 - 6.3
- This article is for Windows only
Summary:
Carbonite Safe Server Backup requires the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 8 or higher to be installed on the system. The CSSB user interface cannot run without the JRE, and backups cannot be configured or managed without the user interface.
The CSSB installation process checks for the appropriate version of the JRE on the system, and prompts the user to install the JRE if it is not detected. The installation cannot proceed until the JRE has been properly installed.

Java 8 packages are available for download from http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. These Java packages include both the Java Runtime Environment (required by CSSB) and the Java browser plugin (not required by CSSB).
Once your download is complete, run the file to install Java.
If necessary, additional steps can be taken to increase the security of a Java installation.
Server administrators may wish to install only the Java Runtime Environment. Alternately, administrators may disable the Java browser plugin. Most Java-related security issues can be traced to the Java browser plugin.
How to Install Only the Java Runtime Environment
The Java Runtime Environment can be downloaded as a standalone product without the browser plugin.
Servers running 64-bit Windows should download the Server JRE package. The Server JRE package is more secure than the standard JRE package, and is only available for 64-bit servers. All other machines should download the standard JRE package.
Locate, download, and install the appropriate JRE package from the following link: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html.
How to Disable the Java Browser Plugin
The Java browser plugin can be disabled without impacting CSSB. This allows users to install the easy installation Java packages while still benefiting from increased security.
The Java browser plugin can be disabled for all browsers, or for individual browsers one at a time. Each browser has different steps required to disable the Java browser plugin. Select the appropriate link below.
