Sandbox Environments and CSSB

Summary:

Some anti-virus programs offer a Sandbox feature in their offerings. The purpose of a Sandbox is to limit the possible impact that a program can have on files on your computer/server while still allowing the use of the program itself.

Running Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB) through a Sandbox environment is not supported.

When Sandbox settings are available you will often see that impacted programs will have a highlighted border around the window to visually display that the program is Sandboxed.

Cause:

When the Carbonite Safe Server Backup (CSSB) software runs in a Sandbox it cannot interact with all its control files. This limitation has many impacts, some of which are noted below:

  • Can prevent any edits to backup sets from being saved
  • Can prevent the import of cloud certificates
  • Can prevent Support from efficiently troubleshooting any possible issues with your backup set(s)

Solution:

If you have CSSB set to run through a Sandbox, then the Sandbox would need to be configured to allow CSSB to launch as normal. Different Sandbox offerings have differing steps in which you either remove programs from a list or add exceptions for specific programs.

The executable that you need to make the exception for is LaunchCLI.exe in the CSSB bin directory. The default directory path for that file is C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Safe Server Backup(x64)\bin.
