Disconnecting an External Hard Drive

  • This article is for Windows only

Summary:

If you need to disconnect your external hard drive from your computer, it is imperative to use the Safely Remove Hardware tool located in the Windows Notification area to do so. Disconnecting the drive without using this tool could result in drive or data corruption.

Solution:

The Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon looks like the end of a USB cable with a white check mark in a green circle over it. Right-click this icon to see a list of media and drives, then select your drive and follow the prompts.

If this icon isn't visible in the Notification Area, click the upward facing arrow to Show Hidden Icons.

Once complete, Windows will inform you that it is safe to disconnect the drive.
