There are two methods for restricting access to Carbonite: a visual method for Windows XP Professional and a command line method for Windows XP Home Edition. Both methods restrict backup functionality to people in the Administrators group.

For Windows XP Professional

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup.
  2. In the menu click Tools; Folder Options.
  3. Click View and unmark Use simple file sharing (recommended).
  4. Within Windows Explorer, right-click on CarboniteNSE.dll and select Properties.
  5. Click Security.
  6. Remove all entries except Administrators and then click OK.
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 for the CarboniteUI.exe file.

Users in the Administrator group will now be the only users on the computer who can perform Carbonite operations.

For Windows XP Home Edition

XP Home does not have a graphical way to set security so you need to use the shell as follows:

  1. Click the Windows Start button and select Run and type cmd and then press the [ENTER] key.
  2. Type cd C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup and press the [ENTER] key.
  3. Type cacls CarboniteNSE.dll /d everyone /g administrators:f and press the [ENTER] key.
  4. Type cacls CarboniteUI.exe /d everyone /g administrators:f and press the [ENTER] key.

Users in the Administrator group will now be the only users on the computer who can perform Carbonite operations.
