Difficulty Backing Up Drives Encrypted by Software

  • This article is for Windows and Mac

Disk Level Encryption

Programs like BitLocker and TrueCrypt can be used to encrypt the hard drive on your computer and protect the Operating System against offline attacks. If the drive remains encrypted/locked, Carbonite will not be able to "see" the hard drive or perform normal backup operations. Once unencrypted/unlocked, the drive will be accessible for Carbonite to resume backing up your data.

File Level Encryption

Files and folders that are individually encrypted on a drive will be backed up in the same manner. This means that the files will be backed up in the encrypted form and will remain unchanged by Carbonite through a restore. You will need to decrypt the Carbonite restored files using the same method that was originally used by the software to encrypt the files.
