Encryption Keys and Carbonite Features for Carbonite Safe
- This article is for Windows only
When you first install Carbonite onto your computer, you can choose to manage your own encryption key. Managing your own encryption key gives you greater security over your backup but restricts your access to some Carbonite features. If you choose to manage your own encryption key, Carbonite permanently removes it from our servers to prevent unauthorized access. This means that you will be unable to install Carbonite or access your backup if you lose your encryption key. You can let Carbonite manage your encryption key at any time by uploading it to our servers from within your Carbonite account. Encryption keys can be managed on Windows computers and cannot be managed on Mac computers at this time.
Carbonite Safe customers have access to Carbonite's Anytime Anywhere Access, which allows you to access your files remotely from any computer with internet access. Carbonite needs to be managing your encryption key to be able to use this feature. If you are currently managing your Carbonite encryption key and would like to use Anytime Anywhere Access, you will first need to upload your encryption key from within your Carbonite account.
Carbonite Safe customers in the United States can request Courier Recovery Service. To use this feature, however, Carbonite needs to be managing your encryption key. You can upload your encryption key from within your Carbonite account at any time to then be able to request Courier Recovery
